Now is the perfect time to complete the renovations you have been thinking about for years or build your dream home with the help of a government grant and record low interest rates.
As announced on 29 November, the Australian Federal Government made an extension to the HomeBuilder program to 31 March 2021.
A $15,000 grant is now available for building contracts (new builds and substantial renovations) signed between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2021.
The deadline has been extended for all applications to be submitted, including applications for the $25,000 grant and the new $15,000 grant. The $25,000 grant refers to contracts signed between 4 June 2020 to 31 December 2020, whereas the new $15,000 grant refers to contracts signed between 1 January 2021 to 31 March 2021.
To qualify for the grant, you must earn less than $125,000 as a single or $200,000 as a couple. As of now, the property value cannot exceed $950,000 in NSW, $850,000 in Victoria but remains $750,000 in all other States and Territories. The home must not be worth more than $1.5 million before the renovation for both grants. The renovation itself cannot be used for additions to the property not related with the main residence.
The construction commencement timeframe has been extended from three months to six months for all HomeBuilder applicants. This also applies to eligible contracts signed on or after 4 June 2020.
Lastly, if the eligible contract was signed on or after 29 November 2020, the builder must have obtained a valid licence or registration before 29 November 2020. Whereas, if the eligible contract was signed before 29 November 2020, the builder must have obtained a valid licence or registration before 4 June 2020.
