October Garden Notes - Embrace Spring's Sunshine & Garden Challenges!

October Garden Notes 24 Header D

Welcome to the October Garden Club notes. Spring is definitely here

We are currently experiencing a typical spring cycle of fine, sunny days interspersed with cool, showery, and windy periods. Perhaps an early indication of what summer might bring is the fact that we've already had temperatures in the high twenties. While this is certainly wonderful weather for enjoying life, it does present a few challenges in the garden.

Stay Ahead of the Heat: Garden Care and Indoor Plant Tips

Watering the garden, particularly pots and hanging baskets, is something to keep an eye on as temperatures rise above 25 degrees. It's amazing how quickly the soil dries out on these mild days, especially if it gets a bit windy! If you haven’t checked your irrigation system already, do so as soon as possible. Check your hoses and fittings for wear and tear, as garden hoses in our climate become brittle and crack more quickly, and O-rings on hose fittings wear out similarly. Replacing any worn parts now will save you money and reduce frustration later when things start leaking.

The ground is warming up nicely for planting summer vegetables and flowers. When purchasing veggie seedlings, consider some from the 'Heirloom Range.' These varieties have been tried and tested over many years and are almost guaranteed to reward you with some of the best-tasting vegetables you've ever grown. Choose from tomatoes, cucumbers, and many more. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases in the garden now, too. I’ve noticed quite a lot of aphids on the roses in the last week, and if we get warm, moist weather, fungal problems like black spot will likely appear as well. Spray or dust as necessary, always keeping in mind that natural predators like ladybirds are also present and can be affected by most pesticides. There are 'friendlier' natural alternatives available if you prefer.

Another benefit of warmer weather is the arrival of a wider range of indoor plants in stores, most of which originate from tropical regions. It's amazing how much of a difference a plant or two can make to the look and feel of a room, not to mention the air quality benefits. No matter the size of your room or the lighting, whether in a residential or office space, we can always suggest a couple of plants to suit. Ask any of our qualified staff for advice and recommendations to meet your specific needs.

Lawn Care Essentials: Mowing, Feeding & Weed Control Tips

Now that lawns are starting to grow vigorously and will require more regular mowing, spend a little time checking your mower. Get it serviced or install new blades—you’ll be amazed at how much cleaner the cut is with sharp blades, which are also less damaging to the grass. If you haven’t fed your lawn yet, now’s the time, and stay on top of controlling any weeds. Spot spray if you only have a few, or use one of the Weed and Feed options if you prefer—just make sure to choose the right product for your lawn type.

Hydrangeas should start appearing on the shelves this month as well. With pink, blue, and white flowers, they are magnificent in the ground or in pots, especially in a spot that gets some morning sun, like the eastern side of the house. They tend to sell quickly, so keep an eye out when you're in stores.

Final Notes

There’s plenty to keep us busy in the garden this October, so when the weather permits, get outside and enjoy our delayed spring. Don’t forget to stay sun smart—I forgot to apply sunscreen over the weekend and ended up a bit 'pink!
