Autumn Gardening
Autumn has arrived as we slowly say goodbye to the summer days over the coming weeks. Autumn presents many opportunities in the garden to prepare for the inevitable cooler change in weather and ensure your garden is looking bright and vibrant come spring.
Autumn is the time to prepare your lawn for winter
A healthy and green lawn is still the cornerstone of Australian gardens. Everyone wants an eye-catching, healthy, green and weed-free lawn and Autumn really is the best time to feed your lawn. By feeding your lawn in Autumn you promote strong root growth and this will prepare it for the cold winter ahead. We suggest using Brunnings Green up Fertiliser. Brunnings Green up is a special formulation of essential nutrients needed to encourage both greening and healthy roots.
We also suggest in Autumn to treat your lawn for winter grass. It is best to treat winter grass as early in its life cycle and the best time is before you even see it. Autumn is also a good time to sew lawn seeds whether you are repairing or seeding a new lawn. For repairing, we suggest you try Brunnings Turbo Patch. It suits most lawn situations and is blended with a slow-release fertiliser and wetting agent to assist in moisture uptake for the young seedlings while providing important nutrients during the critical plant development phase. This results in a high-density lawn with excellent vigour with a dark green colour.
Protect your fruit trees over the coming months
Autumn is also the time to give your fruit trees that little bit of extra attention. Feed them now with Brunnings Organic Fruit and Citrus food, watering well after application. Check for pests and treat aphids and scale insects with Brunnings White Oil or Multicrop Eco Pest Oil. For reducing the threat of codling moths we suggested trying the Buzz Fruit Tree Grease Band. The fruit tree grease band will prevent female wingless moths from climbing tree trunks of your fruit trees before they have had a chance to lay eggs, preventing problems later when the caterpillars emerge to feed on leaves. This will also protect your fruit and ornamental trees against caterpillars, ants and earwigs. Bands are poison free, non-toxic and will stay effective for up to 2 months.
Start planting your flowering bulbs
Now is the time to plant your spring flowering bulbs, which are in-store now. Start planting now for a mass display of Daffodils, Dutch Iris, Hyacinth, Tulips, Freesia and many more different varieties, for a beautiful display this spring. Always choose a spot with lots of light and well-drained soil. Don’t forget to put a few handfuls of Brunnings All Purpose fertiliser into the planting area. Sweet Peas Seeds are also available now. Sweet Peas make a colourful addition to the garden during the winter months and there are many varieties to choose from, from climbers to dwarf varieties.
